Venice Film Festival opens with lifetime awards for Clooney and Burstyn amid Hollywood studio retreat
The 83rd Venice Film Festival opens on Wednesday with a program featuring 150 films over 11 days, running through Sept. 12. The festival will award George Clooney and Ellen Burstyn the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement on its first day, with Laura Dern delivering the tribute speech for Clooney in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido .
This year’s competition includes only one major studio production, Disney’s *Wild Horse Nine* by British director Martin McDonagh, a sharp drop from past editions that premiered Oscar-contending films like *The Shape of Water*, *Nomadland*, and *Joker*. Festival director Alberto Barbera defended the selection in *La Stampa*, stating, “It’s not Venice’s fault if Hollywood is in crisis” .
The lineup features high-profile premieres, including *Primetime*, Lance Oppenheim’s debut film starring Robert Pattinson as disgraced TV journalist Chris Hansen, and Florian Zeller’s *Bunker*, with Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem as a couple in conflict over a billionaire’s underground shelter. Both films are in competition for the Golden Lion .
Outside the competition, a documentary on British rock band Oasis, focusing on the reunion of brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, will screen. The festival also commemorates the centennial of Marilyn Monroe and the late Bernardo Bertolucci, whose final screenplay, *The Echo Chamber*, directed by Andrea Pallaoro, is in the official selection .
Clooney, a longtime fixture at the festival, has attended since 1998 with *Out of Sight* and later premiered *Good Night, and Good Luck* in 2005, which earned him his first Oscar nomination for directing. He owns a villa near Lake Como and has frequently used Venice as a backdrop for personal and professional milestones .
The festival’s opening and closing ceremonies will be hosted by actors Nicola Maupas and Greta Scarano, who emphasized the event’s focus on contemporary issues like war, censorship, and climate change. Scarano, who signed a petition for Gaza, noted that her son gives her hope for the future .
