Xavi Hernández named Netherlands mens national team coach on four-year deal through 2030 World Cup
The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) announced on Wednesday that Xavi Hernández will become the new head coach of the Netherlands men’s national football team, succeeding Ronald Koeman. The 46-year-old Spaniard signed a four-year contract through the 2030 World Cup, the KNVB confirmed on X .
Xavi, a former FC Barcelona player and manager, will make his debut on Sept. 24 in a Nations League match against Germany, managed by Jürgen Klopp . He replaces Koeman, who left after the Netherlands’ elimination in the Round of 16 at this summer’s World Cup .
In a press release, Xavi called the appointment “a tremendous honor” and cited his connection to Dutch football, shaped by his upbringing at Barcelona’s academy under the influence of Johan Cruyff and Rinus Michels. He also acknowledged the impact of Louis van Gaal and Frank Rijkaard on his career . “The Netherlands has a rich football culture and a clear vision that appeals to me enormously: attacking football, based on possession, with creativity, passion, and conviction,” he said .
Xavi has been without a club since leaving Barcelona in 2024, where he managed the team to a La Liga title in the 2022-23 season and a Supercopa de España in 2023 . His coaching career began in 2019 at Al Sadd in Qatar .
The KNVB’s search for a new coach included an interview with Arne Slot, who later stated a preference for club management . Xavi is the first foreign head coach of the Netherlands since Ernst Happel in 1978 .
Xavi said he plans to incorporate Dutch football knowledge into his technical staff, with Patrick Kluivert among the rumored candidates for assistant manager . As a player, Xavi won over 700 matches with Barcelona and was part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning squad .
