Nigel Farage resigns as UK MP to force Clacton by-election amid financial scrutiny
Nigel Farage resigns as UK MP in gamble to clear his name ahead of by-election
Nigel Farage, the leader of the right-wing populist Reform UK party, announced on Tuesday that he would resign his seat as Member of Parliament for Clacton-on-Sea, triggering a snap by-election in a high-stakes bid to reassert his political legitimacy amid mounting scrutiny over undeclared donations.
In a video statement, Farage said he would step down from his role as MP for Clacton-on-Sea, a constituency he has held since July 2024, and immediately seek re-election in the resulting by-election. “I will resign my mandate as MP for Clacton-on-Sea, which will trigger a by-election,” he said. “The people of Clacton must be the judges of my actions.”
The move comes after weeks of pressure over allegations that Farage failed to declare substantial financial gifts, including a £5 million donation from a cryptocurrency billionaire received shortly before the 2024 general election. The donation, which Farage described as a personal gift without conditions, was not reported as required under parliamentary rules. The case is now under investigation by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards, with the potential for sanctions including temporary suspension from the House of Commons.
Farage has also faced questions over undeclared support from George Cottrell, a longtime ally and convicted fraudster, who allegedly funded security services and staffing for Farage in the year prior to his election. Cottrell, who was sentenced to 20 months in prison in 2021 for fraud and money laundering, is reported to have provided services worth tens of thousands of pounds that were not disclosed in Farage’s parliamentary register of interests.
The Reform UK leader framed his resignation as a direct challenge to the political establishment, accusing media and opponents of orchestrating a smear campaign. “This is a people versus the establishment by-election,” he said in a combative address. “It’s a chance to stick two fingers up to the entire establishment.”
Political observers have described the move as a calculated risk. If Farage loses the by-election, he would be unable to serve as Reform UK’s candidate for prime minister in the next general election, as British convention requires party leaders seeking high office to be sitting MPs. Reform UK currently leads national polls, and Farage’s continued leadership is seen as central to the party’s electoral strategy.
Major parties have reacted with skepticism. The Conservatives and Labour have indicated they will not field candidates in the Clacton by-election, framing Farage’s resignation as a political stunt. “It’s a circus,” said one senior Conservative figure. Reform UK has dismissed such criticism as part of the establishment’s coordinated attack on its agenda.
The by-election date has not yet been set, but is expected to be announced in the coming days. Farage’s gamble hinges on his ability to mobilize his base in Clacton, a Brexit stronghold where 70% of voters supported leaving the European Union in 2016 and where Farage won 46.2% of the vote in 2024.
