Nicaraguan writer Gioconda Belli wins 150,000 FIL Literature Prize in Romance Languages
Nicaraguan writer Gioconda Belli won the 2026 FIL Literature Prize in Romance Languages on Monday, awarded with a $150,000 purse. The jury, announcing the decision at the Hyatt Regency in Guadalajara, Mexico, selected her unanimously, calling her “one of the most powerful voices among contemporary Latin American authors” and praising her work for “revitalizing the poetic expression of the body, female desire and enjoyment” .
Belli, 77, accepted the news via video call, thanking the audience and dedicating words to Mexico, which she described as “my first exile and an experience of solidarity, because an exile without support is very hard, and there I found wonderful, loving people.” She added, “I have always seen this prize as something extraordinary for all the men and women who have won it” .
The award ceremony will take place on Nov. 28 during the opening of the 40th Guadalajara International Book Fair, which runs through Dec. 6. Belli, author of works such as *La mujer habitada*, *Waslala* and *El país de las mujeres*, has lived in exile in Madrid since 2023, when Nicaragua’s government under Daniel Ortega stripped her of citizenship alongside over 300 others for alleged “treason to the homeland.” Spain granted her Spanish nationality in response, with Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stating on X that “defenders of democracy and freedom have Spain’s support” .
Belli had previously accepted Chilean citizenship in 2023. In recent months, she told reporters that Nicaragua is experiencing “a dictatorship like Latin America has not seen in decades, the worst kind, because it is that of someone who fought against a tyrant only to replace him,” referring to Ortega, her former comrade in the Sandinista National Liberation Front .
