White House blocks OpenAI and Anthropic from sharing new AI models with UK safety institute
The White House has directed OpenAI and Anthropic to withhold new AI models from the U.K.’s AI Safety Institute until U.S. agencies review them first, Politico reported on Friday. The request came from the Office of the National Cyber Director, forcing both companies to choose between complying or risking White House disapproval.
Anthropic has already complied, restricting its Claude Mythos 5.1 model to U.S. organizations only. The U.K.’s AI Safety Institute, one of the world’s leading government testing agencies, had previously gained early access to frontier models, including OpenAI’s GPT-6 Astra, which it tested before release. In a letter to Parliament, AISI Director Henry de Zoete confirmed the agency still retains access to frontier models.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham downplayed the dispute at the UN General Assembly, advocating for "shared global principles and standards." The U.S. Center for AI Standards and Innovation, tasked with reviews, currently lacks a permanent director and operates with only a few dozen staffers .
