New Zealander Ryan Fox wins British Open at Royal Birkdale with final-hole birdie

Ryan Fox won the British Open at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, on Sunday with a birdie on the final hole. The 39-year-old New Zealander secured his first major title with a total score of 270, 10 under par, and received $3.2 million in prize money.
Fox, the son of former All Blacks rugby player Grant Fox, became the second New Zealander to win the Open, following Bob Charles' victory in 1963. He carded a record-tying round of 62 on Saturday, which set up his final-round charge.
"I don't really know what to think at the moment," Fox said after his victory. "I spoke to my kids last night and they said 'bring back a trophy'. I think this is a pretty cool one to bring back for them."
Fox's final-round 68 was enough to edge out American Cameron Young by one stroke. Sam Burns, who started the day with a two-shot lead, finished third after a final-round 72.
The victory is the biggest win of Fox's career, surpassing his previous best finish at a major. His father, Grant Fox, was part of the New Zealand team that won the first Rugby World Cup in 1987 and is considered one of the best kickers in rugby history.
Fox was tied for 52nd after the first two rounds but moved into contention with his record-tying round of 62 on Saturday. In the final round, he made birdies at holes 13, 14, 16, and 18 to secure the victory.
Cameron Young, who started the final round three shots back, made a strong charge with a front-nine 29 but finished with a bogey on the 18th hole. Sam Burns, the overnight leader, saw his chances fade with three consecutive bogeys on holes 4, 5, and 6.
Other notable players, including defending champion Scottie Scheffler, finished further down the leaderboard. Scheffler, the world number one, ended in a tie for fourth at seven under par after a rollercoaster final round.
Fox is the oldest player to win his first major since Henrik Stenson at the 2016 British Open.
The 154th British Open was held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England.
Fox's victory was met with celebration from his family and fans. His children had encouraged him to bring back a trophy, and he delivered with the iconic Claret Jug.
