Root's unbeaten 99 steers England to cricket win over India ahead of decisive final match

England's Joe Root scored an unbeaten 99 to lead his team to victory over India in their latest cricket match, setting up a decisive final match. The win was a significant boost for England, with Root's performance being particularly notable.
At the British Open in golf, American Jackson Suber leads after the first round with a score of five under par. The 26-year-old, playing in just his third major, had a memorable first round at Royal Birkdale, picking up five shots in eight holes, including an eagle on the 17th. He is one shot ahead of England's Dan Brown and South Korean Im Sung-jae.
Brown, from Yorkshire, shot a four-under 66 early on day one, taking advantage of scoreable morning conditions. "It's only Thursday but hopefully I'm in a similar area on the leaderboard come Sunday," Brown said.
Eight English golfers finished the first round under par, raising hopes for a first English winner of the Open in 34 years. The last English winner was Sir Nick Faldo at Muirfield in 1992. The last English winner on English soil was Tony Jacklin at Royal Lytham & St Annes in 1969.
Local hero Tommy Fleetwood, from nearby Southport, shot a solid one-under 69, improving on his opening round of six over when Birkdale last hosted the Open in 2017. Six other Englishmen - Jordan Smith, Matt Wallace, Laurie Canter, Alex Fitzpatrick, Matthew Southgate, and Tyrrell Hatton - also shot under par.
However, Matt Fitzpatrick, one of the pre-Open favorites, finished two over after a difficult evening in windier conditions. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, playing alongside Fitzpatrick, had a rollercoaster round with six bogeys and four birdies, ending with a two-over 72, seven shots off the lead.
In other sports news, Belgian rider Tim Merlier won the 12th stage of the Tour de France, while defending champion Tadej Pogacar retained the overall lead. At the Belgian Grand Prix in Formula 1, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc is looking to maintain his lead in the championship after his win at Silverstone.
