Russian President Vladimir Putin accused NATO and European leaders on Friday of preparing for war with Russia, framing their military exercises and support for Ukraine as evidence of escalating hostility. Speaking at a meeting of the Military-Industrial Commission, Putin claimed some European leaders were using the Ukraine conflict to justify military buildups, alleging they had openly declared preparations for war with Moscow.
Putin insisted Russia harbors no aggressive intentions toward Europe and remains ready to restore relations with its neighbors. He criticized European military drills in the Baltic Sea, stating they included preparations to seize civilian vessels despite public commitments to international law. "Let us live in peace — otherwise, we, too, will be forced to respond," he said .
The remarks came as Western nations continue to condemn Russian actions in Ukraine and provide military and economic aid to Kyiv. Putin’s comments were echoed in state media, which quoted him as saying threats to Russia were not diminishing, with NATO expanding its presence globally .
Putin also outlined priorities for Russia’s State Armament Program, emphasizing the nuclear triad as the "absolute priority" to maintain sovereignty and global power balance. He noted 92% of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces are already equipped with modern weapons .
