UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings against Belgrade’s Red Star on Saturday over banners glorifying Ratko Mladić displayed by fans at Viktoria Plzen stadium in the Czech Republic, according to reports citing the Athletic. The case involves charges of “racist and/or discriminatory behavior,” “conveying a message inappropriate for a sporting event,” and team misconduct. An aggravating factor is the club’s official social media post of a banner reading “General eternal glory and thanks,” referencing Mladić, who died Thursday in Hague custody at 84 after a life sentence for genocide in Srebrenica and other war crimes.
Serbian Justice Minister Nenad Vujić announced the state will bury Mladić with full honors and transport his remains from The Hague once procedures are finalized. Vujić said Serbia is prepared to act immediately upon notification from the Hague Mechanism, which confirmed Mladić’s death on Aug. 27 while hospitalized.
In Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky marked Defenders’ Remembrance Day on Aug. 29 by presenting awards to families of fallen soldiers, calling it a day of both honor and sorrow. Zelensky stated, “We cherish the memory of every name, every story, and every hero who is now part of our nation’s great history. Eternal memory to the fallen soldiers. Eternal gratitude.” The commemoration included Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara, Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi, and other top officials.
A Czech volunteer, Jiří Kotrla, call sign “Maus,” who served with Ukraine’s 3rd Assault Brigade, was honored in Olomouc. Kotrla, 27, was killed on Aug. 29, 2025; his remains are still in Russian-occupied territory. Ukraine’s Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Vasyl Zvarych, said, “Jiří went to Ukraine to fight against injustice. He made the pain of his friends his own. Ukraine considers Jiří a true hero. We consider him our brother.” A memorial event in Kyiv on Aug. 1 also honored Kotrla and Jonatan Gertli, another Czech volunteer killed in December 2025.
The Memory Table initiative saw nearly 6,000 establishments in Ukraine and 17 other countries set tables for fallen defenders on Aug. 29, the fourth year of the tradition.
