Student kills six at Thai school near Bangkok before taking own life
A student opened fire at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province northwest of Bangkok on Friday, killing six people and wounding at least 15 others, according to Thai police.
The gunman, identified as a student at the school, first shot and killed his grandparents at their home before arriving at the campus, Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan said. Authorities found the suspect dead at the scene, with initial reports indicating he had taken his own life. Police recovered 26 spent bullet casings and an additional 34 rounds of ammunition at the school, and confirmed the firearm belonged to the student’s grandfather .
Among the dead were three teachers and three students, police said. Health Minister Pattana Promphat later stated that 22 people were injured, with nine in critical condition, though some injuries resulted from falls during the chaos rather than gunfire .
The attack began around 10 a.m. local time, with students and teachers evacuating the school as police and emergency responders arrived. Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots—“bang, bang, bang”—before a brief pause and another volley, according to Reuters . Photos from the scene showed students and staff comforting one another outside the building, while traffic near the school came to a standstill as parents collected their children.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed shock at the incident, telling reporters, “It’s such a terrible incident. It should never have happened. How could this happen in our country?” He ordered officials to assist the victims and their families .
The school, Debsirin Nonthaburi, enrolls about 3,100 students and has 147 teachers, according to district authorities. It is part of a prestigious public school network in Thailand, attended by high-ranking political figures .
Police are investigating the motive, though local media cited possible bullying as a factor, with reports that the suspect had been mocked and physically assaulted by classmates. The student was described by a teacher as a “good kid with good study records,” according to a Telegram post by Insider Paper .
Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the region, with an estimated 10 million firearms in circulation—roughly one for every seven inhabitants. Despite strict laws carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison for illegal possession, repeated shootings have occurred in recent years. In February, a teacher was killed and a student injured in a separate school attack in Hat Yai district. In 2022, a former police officer killed dozens, including children, in a gun and knife rampage in Nong Bua Lamphu province .
