Maltas Labour Party wins historic fourth term despite corruption allegations
Malta’s ruling Labour Party secures a historic fourth consecutive term in office, defying opposition criticism of corruption and governance failures. Preliminary results show Labour winning 51.8% of the vote, a 3.3-point drop from 2022, while the centre-right Nationalist Party (PN) gains ground with 44.7%, a 3-point increase. Two smaller parties, Momentum and ADPD, each secure 1.5%, but fail to cross the threshold for parliamentary representation .
Prime Minister Robert Abela declares victory hours before the official count, calling it a "historic" achievement for the party. "We have written history," Abela tells supporters in Valletta, framing the result as a mandate for continuity amid regional instability, including the ongoing Middle East crisis . The win extends Labour’s 12-year grip on power, a period marked by economic growth but also persistent allegations of cronyism and media suppression.
Opposition leader Alex Borg of the PN concedes defeat but vows to hold the government accountable. "Malta has chosen corruption again," Borg says, echoing long-standing accusations of nepotism and lack of transparency under Labour’s rule . The election saw record turnout at 82%, with voters prioritising stability over reform, despite a 2023 EU report criticising Malta’s rule-of-law deficiencies.
Labour’s victory comes as the party faces mounting scrutiny over its handling of migration, energy contracts, and judicial independence. The European Commission has repeatedly urged reforms, but Abela’s government has dismissed criticism as politically motivated. With no coalition partners, Labour will govern alone in the 67-seat parliament, where it holds 38 seats to the PN’s 29 .
The result contrasts sharply with Ethiopia’s parallel elections, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s Prosperity Party is poised for a landslide amid accusations of authoritarianism. While Malta’s vote was peaceful and competitive, Ethiopia’s polls were marred by boycotts, ethnic violence, and the exclusion of key opposition figures.
