Estonia PM says defense minister may resign over defense deal irregularities as Northern Cyprus sacks transport minister after ferry sinking
Estonia’s Prime Minister Kristen Michal said Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur may take political responsibility for questionable defense deals, though he sees no personal fault, ahead of a Cabinet meeting on Thursday. “This certainly does not look good. As things stand, I do not see any personal fault on the part of the defense minister. But that in no way rules out taking political responsibility,” Michal told ERR, adding that Pevkur himself must decide .
Michal convened the meeting to review accounting irregularities in the defense sector, with the auditor general, Defense Forces Commander Andrus Merilo, RKIK Director General Elmar Vaher, and Permanent Secretary Kaimo Kuusk in attendance. He criticized former employees and managers of the Estonian Center for Defense Investments for entering contracts that could create state liabilities without reporting them, calling it “completely incomprehensible” .
In Northern Cyprus, Prime Minister Ünal Üstel dismissed Transport Minister Erhan Arıklı to remove any doubt from the investigation into a ferry sinking off Kyrenia that killed at least nine people, with 19 still missing. Üstel stated the move ensures the probe proceeds without suspicion, as search and rescue efforts continue at a depth of roughly 550 meters . Arıklı called his dismissal “not ethical” in a statement to the Cyprus Mail .
