A record 230 people arrived in the UK on Monday after crossing the English Channel in a single boat, according to British media and France’s SNSM lifeboat service. The rubber dinghy, approximately 15 meters long, departed the northeastern French coast late Sunday and reached British waters early Monday, where it was intercepted by UK authorities.
The SNSM stated that more than 20 children were among the passengers, describing the scene as chaotic. French lifeboats escorted the vessel until British authorities took over in UK waters. The SNSM called it “a new and sad record for the number of people crammed onto these flimsy boats” .
The previous record for a single crossing was 165 people, set last month. A UK Home Office spokesperson condemned the incident as an example of “the reckless and dangerous tactics employed by the criminal gangs facilitating these crossings, who continue to put lives at risk by cramming ever greater numbers of people onto unseaworthy vessels” .
Provisional figures show 14,819 people have crossed the Channel so far this year, a 43% decline compared with the same period in 2025, according to the Home Office. The ministry added that it had signed a payment-by-results deal with France to increase patrols on French beaches by 40% .
A UK-bound dinghy carrying 173 people capsized in the Channel earlier this month after its engine caught fire, prompting a major search-and-rescue operation. Jean-Marc Lamblin, the SNSM’s local branch director, told AFP that smugglers have increasingly used 15-meter dinghies in recent months, with passenger numbers rising steadily .
Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s spokesperson called the images of the latest crossing “shocking” and said they showed “the reality behind the ruthless smuggling gangs that are prepared to risk human lives for profit” .
