Zelenskyy suspends Ukraines prosecutor general after he leaves country amid corruption scandal
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy suspended Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko on Monday and urged parliament to dismiss him after Kravchenko left the country amid a corruption scandal involving his office.
Kravchenko, who announced his resignation on Sept. 7, crossed the border overnight, according to Ukrainian media citing law enforcement sources. He denied the allegations, calling them “unfounded,” and said in a Telegram post that he was abroad to inform international partners about “the real situation within the anti-corruption authorities” and “signs of uncontrolled concentration of influence” by them .
The scandal centers on a money-laundering network allegedly run by a senior official in Kravchenko’s office, which investigators say protected fraudulent call centers in exchange for bribes. Authorities claim the scheme laundered millions, funding purchases of real estate, jewelry, and other assets .
Kravchenko counterattacked on Monday, announcing he had signed a notice of suspicion against Semen Kryvonos, director of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU), accusing him of forging official documents. Kryvonos denied the allegations, stating he had not been formally served with any charges .
NABU and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO) called Kravchenko’s actions a “systematic attack” on independent anti-corruption institutions. Zelenskyy’s decree suspending Kravchenko was published Monday, with parliament expected to vote on his dismissal on Tuesday .
