FDA advisory panel backs cancer blood test despite effectiveness doubts
A U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel on Tuesday gave tepid support to a new cancer-screening blood test, despite concerns over its effectiveness and overall benefits, according to the Financial Times.
The committee’s endorsement follows the test’s failure in a U.K. study earlier this year, which raised doubts about its reliability. The panel’s discussion centered on whether the product’s potential benefits outweigh its limitations, the report said.
The FDA advisory group’s cautious backing comes as regulators weigh whether to approve the test for broader use. The Financial Times noted that the panel’s concerns reflect broader skepticism about the test’s ability to deliver consistent results in detecting cancer early .
