Latvian authorities launched a nationwide seatbelt awareness campaign on Tuesday after 20 people died and many more suffered serious injuries in 47 road accidents in 2025 where seatbelts were not used.
At 11:00, a seatbelt reminder signal was broadcast across radio stations in the “Eiropas Hitu Radio” group, including Retro FM, Radio Skonto, Radio TEV, Radio Skonto Plus, StarFM and TOP radio, as well as at Circle K petrol stations. The initiative aims to highlight the consequences of failing to wear seatbelts, which medical professionals say can turn survivable crashes into life-altering events.
Svens Rubulis, a traumatologist and head of the Trauma Centre at the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics, said many injuries could have been less severe if seatbelts had been used. “Failing to wear a seatbelt in a car crash can change a person’s life in a matter of seconds – resulting in serious injuries, lengthy operations and months of recovery,” Rubulis said. “Fastening your seatbelt takes no more than a few seconds, but those seconds can change the rest of your life.”
Rubulis added that medical staff frequently treat patients who, following accidents, can no longer return to their former lives due to the severity of their injuries. He emphasized that road safety begins with individual choices, urging drivers and passengers to always fasten their seatbelts before setting off.
