Russian lieutenant colonel killed, wife critically injured in St. Petersburg car blast
A Russian lieutenant colonel was killed and his wife critically injured when their car exploded in St. Petersburg on Thursday, according to multiple Russian and international media reports.
The blast occurred around 10 a.m. local time near a Magnit supermarket on Kolpinskoye Highway in the city’s Shushary neighborhood, Fontanka reported. The improvised explosive device detonated as the couple pulled away from their home, severing both of their legs, the outlet said. The man died at the scene, while his wife was hospitalized in critical condition.
Authorities initially described the incident as a "vehicle fire," confirming one death and one injury but not specifying the military connection, according to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. Fontanka and other outlets identified the victim as a lieutenant colonel, though officials did not release his name.
The neighborhood has been developed with housing for military personnel, with President Vladimir Putin visiting the area in 2010 during his tenure as prime minister to inspect apartments for service members, Agentstvo reported.
The explosion is the latest in a series of blasts targeting Russian military personnel and figures linked to the war in Ukraine. In June, Damir Davydov, a Russian military official responsible for supplying missile and artillery ammunition, was killed in a car bombing outside Moscow. On Aug. 5, a factory director supplying drones to the Russian military was wounded and his driver killed in an explosion near Yekaterinburg, Yahoo News reported. A bomb also detonated at an Italian restaurant in Moscow earlier this month, killing at least five people, including the bomber, according to Russian state media.
Ukraine has claimed responsibility for some attacks on Russian soil, including the killing of Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov in December 2024, but has not commented on Thursday’s incident. Moscow has previously blamed Kyiv for similar attacks, though investigators have not identified suspects in the latest case.
