A 22-year-old Bangladeshi student who had arrived in Cyprus only months earlier to study at a private institution was murdered after a killer lured him with a fabricated job offer and a fake ransom plot, police confirmed on Monday. Shahruar Ahmed Emon’s body was discovered in the Larnaca district over the weekend, more than a week after he vanished, and a 22-year-old man appeared before the Larnaca District Court today for a remand hearing following his confession to the killing .
Investigators said personal items recovered at the scene matched those belonging to the abducted student, and that the suspect had confessed to orchestrating a ruse to extract money from Emon’s family. According to court documents, the accused fabricated a job offer in order to lure the student to a secluded area near Kofinou, where he was then killed. Police believe the motive was financial, with the suspect attempting to pressure the family by falsely claiming Emon was being held for ransom.
Emon’s family, who had traveled from Bangladesh to Cyprus in search of their son, expressed shock and grief after learning of his death. “We came to Cyprus hoping for a better future for Shahruar,” a relative told local media. “We never imagined this would happen.” The case has drawn international attention, with Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in Nicosia and Brussels requesting full cooperation from Cypriot authorities.
Cyprus police have launched a murder investigation and are reviewing CCTV footage and mobile phone records to trace the suspect’s movements in the days leading up to the killing. Forensic teams are examining the body and the surrounding area for additional evidence. The suspect, whose identity has not been released, remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
The murder underscores concerns about safety for international students in Cyprus, where the number of foreign enrollees has risen sharply in recent years. Student advocacy groups have called for enhanced campus security measures and stricter vetting of off-campus housing arrangements. “This is a tragic reminder that no student should have to fear for their life while pursuing an education abroad,” said a spokesperson for the Cyprus Student Union.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the suspect had any prior criminal record or connections to organised crime. The investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are not ruled out as detectives follow multiple leads.
