France orders expulsion of Russian media figure over disinformation threat
French authorities have ordered the expulsion of Xenia Fedorova, a Russian media star and former head of RT France, accusing her of spreading Kremlin propaganda and contributing to disinformation campaigns aimed at destabilizing public order in France.
The expulsion order was issued by the Paris Prefecture of Police and confirmed by the French Interior Ministry on Wednesday, according to reports by French newspaper Libération and AFP. The document seen by Libération states that Fedorova's actions "portent atteinte aux intérêts fondamentaux de l'État" and that her presence in France constitutes a "menace particulièrement grave et actuelle pour l'ordre public."
The order accuses Fedorova of contributing to the dissemination of disinformation aimed at "manipulating public opinion" and "undermining the confidence of European citizens, and particularly French citizens, in their institutions."
Fedorova, who is a regular commentator on media outlets owned by French billionaire Vincent Bolloré, has been accused of acting as a conduit for disinformation campaigns orchestrated by Russian authorities. She regularly appears on the CNews television channel and Europe 1 radio, and writes for Le Journal du Dimanche newspaper.
Fedorova's lawyer, Emmanuel Piwnica, announced that she would immediately lodge an appeal against the expulsion order. "Xenia Fedorova is a journalist. This decision is a serious attack on the freedom of expression of a journalist who has always exercised her activity in the most appropriate manner," Piwnica said.
Her employers, including Canal+ and Lagardère, have also condemned the expulsion order, calling it a "particularly serious breach of freedom of expression."
Fedorova, who previously led RT France, a Kremlin-backed news outlet that was shut down in 2023 following European sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, has been a controversial figure in France. She has been accused by political and media figures of relaying Kremlin propaganda.
French President Emmanuel Macron has previously referred to Fedorova as a "propaganda agent." In 2017, Macron implied that Fedorova was not a journalist, stating, "When media outlets spread defamatory falsehoods, they are no longer journalists. They are instruments of influence."
Fedorova is also banned from entering Germany, according to a source close to the case cited by AFP.
