Krakow city councilors from Civic Coalition and representatives of Monika Piątkowska’s campaign filed an election lawsuit against mayoral candidate Łukasz Gibała on Thursday, demanding a retraction of his claims about potential cooperation with them if he wins the Oct. 11 runoff.
The lawsuit, submitted to the Krakow District Court, targets Gibała’s Sept. 28 statement on RMF FM that six Civic Coalition councilors had approached him, saying they were open to talks and dissatisfied with former mayor Aleksander Miszalski’s work. All 19 Civic Coalition councilors denied the claim in a joint statement on Thursday, asserting they had never discussed cooperation with Gibała and that their signed declarations could serve as court evidence .
Civic Coalition councilor Tomasz Daros called the remarks false and damaging, stating they falsely portray the councilors as opportunistic. “It cannot be that a politician in an election campaign makes false claims that tarnish the good name of councilors,” Daros said during a press briefing .
The court confirmed receipt of the lawsuit but has not yet set a hearing date. Gibała, responding on Thursday, called the lawsuit “absurd” and noted he had only just received it .
