Ray-Ban heir Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio quits EssilorLuxottica roles citing leadership disconnect

Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio resigned as chairman of Ray-Ban and chief strategy officer of EssilorLuxottica, with his departure effective Aug. 31, according to a letter published by Italian financial outlet Milano Finanza . In the letter, Del Vecchio criticized the company’s leadership for growing distant from employees, stating, “The enthusiasm is not what it was. The sense of belonging is not what it was. The distance can be felt. And people sense it before the markets. Always.”
EssilorLuxottica confirmed the resignation, thanking Del Vecchio for his contributions to the group’s growth and the implementation of his father’s strategic vision . The 31-year-old, a son of Luxottica founder Leonardo Del Vecchio, will focus on new entrepreneurial projects but plans to remain a shareholder through Delfin, the family holding company .
The resignation deepens a long-running family dispute over control of EssilorLuxottica, the world’s largest eyewear company, with a fortune of around €40 billion at stake . After the death of founder Leonardo Del Vecchio in 2022, eight heirs—six children from three relationships, his widow Nicoletta Zampillo, and her son Rocco Basilico—each inherited 12.5% of Delfin. The lack of a clear succession plan has led to repeated deadlocks, as near-unanimity is required for key decisions .
Del Vecchio’s exit follows that of his half-brother Rocco Basilico, who left the company’s management earlier this year . In April, six of the eight Delfin shareholders approved the sale of two siblings’ stakes to Leonardo Maria Del Vecchio for approximately €10 billion, which would have made him the largest individual shareholder . However, in June, Delfin’s board rejected providing a letter of patronage required by banks to finance the deal .
Francesco Milleri, chairman and CEO of EssilorLuxottica, and Romolo Bardin, CEO of Delfin, have maintained central roles in the company’s leadership since the founder’s death . Del Vecchio’s letter emphasized his commitment to the company’s long-term vision, stating he would continue to exercise his responsibilities as a shareholder .
