Dutch tour bus crashes in Swiss Alps, killing several and injuring others
A tour bus carrying Dutch passengers crashed in eastern Switzerland on Thursday, killing several people and injuring others, local police said.
The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. between the villages of Susch and Zernez in Graubünden canton, where the coach hit a safety barrier, overturned, and plunged down an embankment, according to a police spokesman cited by Swiss media. The vehicle, operated by Dutch tour company Oad, was carrying 48 passengers, all Dutch nationals, along with a Dutch driver, the Dutch Federation of Travel Agencies (ANVR) confirmed.
Emergency services, including five helicopters and multiple rescue vehicles, responded to the scene, where recovery efforts and evidence collection were underway, Swiss media reported. The ANVR stated it was in contact with victims’ families and coordinating with Swiss authorities, the tour operator, and emergency services. “This is terrible,” the company said in a statement to Swiss outlet 20 Minuten. “We hope that there will be more clarity soon, but now it is primarily up to the authorities to investigate what happened.”
Police did not immediately release the exact number of fatalities or injuries, citing the need to inform victims’ families first. The Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it was working with Swiss authorities and emergency services to provide consular assistance, but added it was “too early” to provide a precise toll. The road remained closed as investigators worked to reconstruct the crash, which preliminary reports suggested involved no other vehicles.
