Bomb kills three outside Moscow restaurant in attack called terrorism by mayor
A homemade explosive device detonated outside the Balzi Rossi restaurant in Moscow’s Kudrinskaya Square on Saturday evening, killing at least three people and injuring 21 others, Russian authorities said.
The blast occurred around 8 p.m. local time when a woman carrying the device was stopped by a security guard at the entrance. The woman, the guard, and a restaurant patron died in the explosion, according to Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee . Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the incident a “brutal terrorist attack” and vowed that those responsible would be punished .
The restaurant was hosting a private event, with local and independent media reporting it was a birthday celebration for Gen. Aleksandr Chaiko, the commander-in-chief of Russia’s Aerospace Forces since May. Chaiko, who led the Eastern Military District during Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, has been accused by Ukrainian authorities of involvement in war crimes, including the Bucha massacre . Russian state media did not confirm his presence at the event.
Witnesses and local reports described heavy security around the venue, including military vehicles and armed personnel. The device, containing approximately 1 kg of TNT and metal fragments, was reportedly disguised as a gift and may have been detonated remotely as the guard inspected it . The Kommersant newspaper cited sources saying the bomb was intended to target guests on the restaurant’s summer terrace .
Russian officials have not publicly identified a suspect or motive, though Sobyanin stated that law enforcement agencies were investigating the circumstances . The restaurant, located in one of Moscow’s Stalin-era skyscrapers, was cordoned off as armed officers secured the area. State media initially reported the explosion occurred in the kitchen, but the restaurant later clarified it happened outside .
The attack follows a pattern of violence in Russia since the start of the Ukraine war, with Moscow previously blaming Kyiv for assassinations and attempted killings of military figures. On the same day, Ukraine conducted drone strikes on multiple Russian regions, including Engels and Samara Oblast, according to Russian defense reports . Authorities did not link these strikes to the Moscow bombing.
