Sydney Marathon medals mistakenly feature Munichs Allianz Arena instead of Sydney stadium

Sydney Marathon organizers acknowledged an error in the design of this year’s finisher medals, which mistakenly depict Munich’s Allianz Arena instead of Sydney’s Allianz Stadium.
A spokesperson for the TCS Sydney Marathon confirmed on Sunday that the medal, unveiled earlier this week on the event’s official Instagram account, features the German stadium rather than the Australian venue along the 42.2-kilometer route. “A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finisher’s medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium,” the spokesperson said. “We’re not going to run from it, it was an unfortunate error, though it’s certainly given everyone something to talk about this weekend, mostly in good humour.”
The medal’s design was promoted with a post encouraging runners to “look closer” to discover the course’s landmarks, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. However, the stadium etched onto the medal resembles Munich’s Allianz Arena, known for its inflatable diamond-shaped panels, rather than Sydney’s Allianz Stadium, which has a flatter facade with long bronze fins.
Allianz Arena’s official Instagram account responded with humor, commenting, “Oh wow, we didn’t have that on our bingo card!” The reverse side of the medal, designed by First Nations artist Ambrose Killian, features an indigo and gold pattern representing the race’s kilometers and the eight global major marathons. Killian told the BBC he was not involved in the design of the medal’s other side.
The marathon, scheduled for August 30, expects around 40,000 participants, following over 120,000 applications. Organizers stated the medals would still be awarded as designed, calling it “a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.” In 2025, the event drew about 35,000 runners from more than 120 countries in its first year as a World Marathon Major.
