France orders protection of critical sites as Macron warns of intensified Russian hybrid attacks
French President Emmanuel Macron warned on Friday that Russia has intensified hybrid attacks against Europe and France, ordering a plan to protect critical infrastructure and defense industry sites in response.
Speaking at a news conference at the Élysée Palace, Macron said France had faced Russian hybrid attacks in recent weeks and that such actions “will not be left without a response.” He linked the threat to broader efforts to destabilize European support for Ukraine, citing last month’s drone attack on Leipzig airport in Germany, which was blamed on Russia, and remarks by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk about potential Russian drone and missile strikes on NATO’s eastern flank.
Tusk told Polish lawmakers on Thursday that Russia was planning strikes on countries supporting Ukraine, with Moscow potentially claiming such attacks were “accidental” to divide the alliance. Macron emphasized that the intent was to intimidate Europe but vowed that France would not be deterred, stating, “Our security today and tomorrow is at stake in Ukraine.”
The warnings follow a series of suspicious incidents, including a Russian drone strike on a passenger train near the Ukraine-Poland border on Sunday and fires at defense facilities across Europe, with some countries attributing them to Russian hybrid tactics. Hybrid warfare typically involves non-military methods such as cyberattacks, sabotage, or disinformation, often carried out through proxies, though Russia denies involvement .
