Ariana Grande will step back from public appearances after concluding her "Eternal Sunshine" tour on Sept. 1 in London, her representative told *People* on Sunday. The 33-year-old singer and actress cited "endless, ongoing public scrutiny" as the reason for the decision, which also includes withdrawing from her planned West End debut in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s *Sunday in the Park with George*.
Producers of the musical confirmed on X that Grande would no longer star alongside *Wicked* co-star Jonathan Bailey in the production, scheduled for summer 2027 at London’s Barbican Theatre. "We know this was not an easy decision," a representative for Empire Street Productions told the BBC. "We fully understand and support her. We only wish her the best."
Grande’s representative emphasized to *People* that she remains in good health and performs a physically demanding show nightly at a high level. The singer has faced renewed public commentary about her appearance following the release of her new album *Petal* on July 31, particularly after its title track’s music video depicted her as a musician facing harsh criticism about her looks. In the video, her character ultimately attacks the critics with a chainsaw.
The scrutiny follows years of public debate about Grande’s changing appearance, which intensified after her roles in *Wicked* and *Wicked: For Good*. She has previously condemned body-shaming as "really dangerous." Grande, an Oscar-nominated actress for *Wicked*, has also been open about the mental health toll of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, where 22 people died after an attack at her concert.
Her current tour concludes its North American leg on Aug. 6 before a 10-date residency at London’s O2 Arena beginning Aug. 15. All shows are sold out.
