Rescue crews in Zimbabwe recovered 26 additional bodies from Lake Kariba on Saturday, bringing the death toll from Tuesday’s ferry disaster to 72, according to police. The overloaded vessel capsized in strong waves while traveling from Kariba town to rural fishing communities in the country’s northwest, where roads are damaged and public transit options are scarce.
Authorities estimated the ferry carried as many as 153 passengers, far exceeding its maximum capacity of 90. Zimbabwe’s disaster management agency reported 77 people were rescued. Police later confirmed at least 18 children were among the dead, including 16 aged 10 or younger, with the youngest victim just 1 year old. The captain, Sign Patsikadova, 59, was also confirmed dead.
Survivors told local media that high winds generated choppy waves that flooded the boat shortly after departure. Passengers had urged the operator to turn back, but the vessel continued into open water before rolling over. Search and recovery operations involving police divers, military personnel and local fishermen continued through Saturday.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa declared a state of disaster and ordered government agencies to mobilize resources to assist victims and accelerate recovery efforts. He acknowledged the tragedy had “exposed serious deficiencies in our maritime capabilities which we have to address immediately so that our places of recreation do not become death traps to the innocent.”
The ferry served as a vital lifeline for remote communities along the lake, connecting them to food supplies, markets and essential services. Its loss has already disrupted food deliveries, with shops facing shortages, residents told The Herald. Lake Kariba, the world’s largest human-made lake by volume, stretches more than 200 kilometers and spans up to 40 kilometers wide. Zimbabwe and Zambia share the lake, with their national border cutting through its center.
In a separate incident, a Polish tourist bus veered off a highway in eastern Hungary near Mezokeresztes early Sunday, killing 12 people and injuring 10, according to Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar. The bus, carrying 57 passengers and two drivers, overturned in a ditch along the M3 motorway. Hungarian Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed the bus was transporting Polish tourists and said consular work was underway. Police stated the driver appeared to have fallen asleep, and the injured were taken to hospitals. The driver was detained.
