Tottenham extend defender Van de Vens contract until 2031 after De Zerbi appointment
Micky van de Ven has signed a two-year contract extension with Tottenham Hotspur, binding the Netherlands defender to the club until 2031, the Premier League side confirmed on Aug. 10. Van de Ven, who joined from Wolfsburg in 2023 on a six-year deal, had been weighing his future before the appointment of manager Roberto De Zerbi in March, which influenced his decision to extend his stay.
The 25-year-old has made 96 appearances for Spurs and won the Europa League in 2025, also captaining the team in its final six matches of last season as Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation. “I’ve always loved Spurs, from the first day I stepped in here,” Van de Ven said. “I love the club, I love the fans and I’ve developed really well here. It’s clear the direction the club wants to go in and I want to be a part of it.” De Zerbi called Van de Ven “one of the best centre-backs in Europe and an important player for us,” adding, “We are building something strong here, and players like Micky are an important part of that future” .
Tottenham has spent £237 million this summer, including a club-record £100 million for Sandro Tonali from Newcastle. Meanwhile, James Maddison, recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in August 2025, posted on Instagram that he is “feeling good” ahead of the new season. De Zerbi had previously said it was “not the right moment to take risks” with Maddison, who returned in May with substitute appearances against Chelsea and Everton .
In other transfer activity, Liverpool announced on Aug. 10 the season-long loan of Uruguay defender Ronald Araújo from Barcelona, with an optional purchase clause of €55 million. Liverpool will cover Araújo’s full salary during the loan. The 27-year-old, under contract at Barcelona until 2031, featured in 38 matches for the Catalan club last season, scoring four goals .
West Ham United also completed the signing of winger Manor Solomon from Tottenham on a three-year contract .
