A cleaning vehicle struck a parked aircraft at Munich Airport early Saturday, injuring the driver and prompting an investigation into the cause of the collision.
The incident occurred around 3 a.m. in a restricted area of the airport, where the vehicle first hit the engine of a stationary plane before crashing into a passenger boarding staircase, according to Munich police. The force of the impact left the driver with serious injuries, and he was airlifted to a hospital by helicopter.
A police spokeswoman said the driver may have experienced health issues prior to the collision, though authorities are still determining the exact cause. The Landshut prosecutor’s office has ordered an expert analysis of the incident, as reported by the Münchner Merkur .
Police emphasized that no other individuals were at risk during the incident, and the accident did not disrupt air traffic. Munich Airport operates under a nighttime flight ban from midnight to 5 a.m., meaning no takeoffs or landings were scheduled at the time . The aircraft was unoccupied, and the boarding bridge was not in use.
