"La Bola Negra" wins Toronto Film Festival People's Choice Award, boosting Oscar bid
"La Bola Negra," directed by Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, won the People’s Choice Award at the 51st Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, strengthening its position as a leading Oscar contender. The award, voted on by festivalgoers, has historically been a strong predictor of Academy Awards success, with nearly every winner since 2012 securing a best-picture nomination.
The Spanish film, starring Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Carlos González and Milo Quifes, with Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close in supporting roles, weaves together the lives of three gay men across three eras—1932, 1937 and 2017—linked by the legacy of Federico García Lorca. The directors, known as Los Javis, said in a statement that the film carries a message about the necessity of self-expression. “Knowing that audiences connected with it and made it their own is the greatest gift we could receive,” they said .
The victory follows the film’s selection as Spain’s submission for the 2027 Oscars in the best international feature category, announced by the Spanish Film Academy earlier this week. It also marks the second major festival win for "La Bola Negra," which previously shared the best director prize at Cannes in May .
Netflix, which acquired the film out of Cannes, has launched a full awards campaign and will give it an extended theatrical release beginning Oct. 16 before streaming it Dec. 2 .
