Four dead as tourist helicopter crashes in Rio de Janeiro forest: Colombian family among victims
Four people died in a helicopter crash in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, according to emergency services and local officials.
The aircraft, operated by a company offering tourist sightseeing flights, crashed near Vista Chinesa, a scenic viewpoint in Tijuca National Park, and burst into flames in a densely forested, mountainous area. Firefighters confirmed the pilot and three Colombian women—all members of the same family—were killed. Colombian Consul General Diana Páez told AFP the victims were Lida Rocío Cubillos, Wendy Manrique Cubillos, and Sofía Murillo Manrique, who had traveled to Rio to celebrate a 15th birthday. The group of six had split into two flights due to capacity limits; the teenager and two others were scheduled for a later trip .
Páez said the bodies were severely burned, complicating identification. Authorities transported the remains to a forensic institute for analysis, with results to be cross-checked against flight records. The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro stated they are awaiting a report from the Center for Research and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents to determine the cause of the crash .
Rio de Janeiro Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere called for heightened oversight of helicopter flights, which have grown more frequent as a tourist attraction. In a social media post, Cavaliere said he had contacted Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency, ANAC, requesting immediate action to intensify safety measures. He added that City Hall would support any necessary steps and suggested flights could be suspended temporarily .
The crash follows a June 14 midair collision between two helicopters over Rio’s western suburb of Recreio dos Bandeirantes, which killed six people, including American artist Oliver Tree and Argentine YouTuber Gaspar Prim .
