Norwegian Warholm wins 400m hurdles in London as Kerr smashes mile world record

Karsten Warholm of Norway won the 400-meter hurdles with a world-leading time of 46.61 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in London on Saturday. Meanwhile, Henriette Jæger set a new Norwegian record in the 400 meters with a time of 49.15 seconds. In another highlight, Josh Kerr of Great Britain broke the world record in the mile with a time of 3 minutes 42.66 seconds.
Warholm's victory marked his first win of the season, improving upon his previous performances. "I shall not be bigger than to say it is a bit special. It is clear we fight a bit about it. I said to myself that it would have been fun to take it," Warholm told NRK after the race, referring to his rivalry with Alison dos Santos of Brazil. Dos Santos and another key rival, Rai Benjamin of the United States, did not compete in London, setting the stage for Warholm's triumph.
Jæger's record-breaking performance came as a surprise even to herself. "I knew I was in good form, but it had to come together. I had hoped for a personal best, but this was a mega personal best, so it was really fun," she told NRK. Her previous record was 49.49 seconds. Christina Vukicevic, an NRK commentator, described Jæger's performance as "fantastic."
Kerr's world record in the mile was a highlight of the day. The 28-year-old Scotsman surpassed the previous record of 3:43.13 set by Hicham El Guerrouj of Morocco in 1999. Kerr, who had previously announced his intention to break the record, was joined by a capacity crowd of 60,000 at the London Stadium. "Sport is very honest, there is no room for mistakes, injuries, and not being 100 percent on point. I know what it takes to be at my best, and I am now," Kerr told NRK before the race.
Other notable performances included Sondre Guttormsen of Norway finishing fifth in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.85 meters, and Tobias Grønstad of Norway finishing eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:44.58. However, Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis had to withdraw from the competition due to an injury sustained during warm-up.
The event also saw German hurdler Emil Agyekum break a 39-year-old German record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 47.45 seconds, finishing second behind Warholm.
