Zelensky meets Vučić in Belgrade to push economic ties amid Serbias Russia-neutral stance
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky began the official part of his visit to Serbia in Belgrade on Saturday, marking his first trip to the Balkan nation since taking office in 2019. The visit follows his arrival on Friday, when he was greeted at the airport by Serbian Energy Minister Dubravka Đedović-Handanović and later dined with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić .
Zelensky’s schedule includes talks with Vučić at the presidential palace and a meeting with Serbian Prime Minister Đuro Macut. Ahead of the discussions, Zelensky stated the agenda would cover expanding economic ties, relations with the European Union, and security issues . Vučić has said the visit will focus on economic cooperation, energy, and shared interests, adding that Serbia remains committed to its policy of not imposing sanctions on Russia .
The visit coincides with intensified Russian strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region, which killed at least three people and injured seven others on Friday . A senior Ukrainian official, speaking anonymously to AFP, described the trip’s goal as an effort to “pull the Serbs away from Russia’s side” .
Serbia has maintained a neutral stance on Western sanctions against Russia while providing non-military assistance to Ukraine, including roughly €60 million in aid since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in 2022 . Vučić has previously met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, most recently in Moscow in May 2025, but has also visited Ukraine, including a July 15 trip where he pledged additional financial, medical, and energy support to Kyiv .
The official welcome ceremony in Belgrade featured a military honor guard and the flags of both nations displayed in New Belgrade near the Palace of Serbia. The visit is being broadcast live on the YouTube channel of the Ukrainian president’s office . Vučić has emphasized that Serbia’s policy on sanctions remains unchanged, though the country has recognized Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity .
