White House drops China AI bans after tech pushback, shifts to U.S. model support
The White House on Tuesday hosted executives from Meta, Anthropic, Google and OpenAI for a crisis meeting following reports of rogue AI agent attacks, according to Reuters . The gathering comes as the Trump administration weighs new restrictions on Chinese AI models, with officials having debated sanctions, trade blacklists and bans on U.S. cloud providers serving Chinese firms, the New York Times reported .
Earlier Tuesday, the administration abandoned plans for immediate bans after pushback from Nvidia, Microsoft, Google and Meta, shifting instead to boosting U.S. model competitiveness, according to the Times. The debate followed accusations by White House science advisor Michael Kratsios that Chinese models like Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 had stolen U.S. technology, calling it “unacceptable” in a post on X .
Meanwhile, OpenAI escalated its legal dispute with Apple, releasing iMessage logs it said showed Apple employees repeatedly contacted a former colleague for internal files after he left the company. OpenAI called Apple’s trade secrets lawsuit “aggressive and oddly personal” .
The administration is also preparing to block new Chinese data center components over security concerns, Reuters reported, as part of a broader effort to protect AI infrastructure . The move follows a split in Silicon Valley, where OpenAI and Anthropic advocated for restrictions on open-weight Chinese models, while major tech firms resisted, fearing market distortion .
Separately, the White House referred questions about military strategy in Iran to U.S. Central Command, which confirmed it was soliciting “new creative and unconventional ways to pressure and punish Iran” via email to analysts, CNN reported . The request came as Trump considered symbolic airstrikes to declare victory in the conflict he launched on Feb. 28 without congressional approval.
