Latvia is interested in expanding cooperation with Spain in the defense industry and the military procurement sector, Latvian Defense Minister Raivis Melnis said during a meeting with Spanish Ambassador to Latvia Manuel Alhama Orenes. The parties discussed bilateral projects, including a contract Latvia has signed with the Spanish company GDELS-Santa Barbara Sistemas for the procurement of infantry fighting vehicles for the National Armed Forces (NBS).

In related news, a new European coalition involving Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom is looking to build a shared anti-ballistic missile capacity for Europe. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky joined nine other European leaders in Paris to announce this coalition, which aims to support Ukraine's own missile defense system, dubbed FREYJA.

Meanwhile, the European Union is facing challenges with its new border control system, which has tripled the time necessary for citizens to pass through passport control. The system, known as the Entry Exit System (EES), has caused delays even after optimization measures were introduced.

Additionally, support for new economic sanctions against Russia is declining within the EU. According to the Financial Times, several member states, including Greece, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Portugal, have expressed concerns about the negative impact of new sanctions on their economies.

Latvia is also providing nearly €160,000 in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, assembled through donations from Latvian residents. This aid is part of ongoing efforts to support Ukraine amidst its conflict with Russia.

Lastly, Lithuania is looking to make a mark on Europe's "coolcation" map, aiming to attract tourists seeking unique and refreshing travel experiences.
