Swiss rider Reusser wins Tour de France Femmes time trial to take yellow jersey
Marlen Reusser of Switzerland won the fourth stage of the Tour de France Femmes on Monday, claiming the first yellow jersey of her career after a dominant performance in a 21-kilometer time trial from Gevrey-Chambertin to Dijon. The 34-year-old time trial world champion completed the course in 27 minutes and 30 seconds, finishing four seconds ahead of Lieke Nooijen of the Netherlands and 18 seconds clear of Demi Vollering, also of the Netherlands, who now sits second overall, 14 seconds behind Reusser in the general classification.
Reusser, riding for Movistar, overtook overnight leader Sigrid Haugset of Norway, who dropped to fourth overall after finishing three minutes behind the stage winner. Defending champion Pauline Ferrand-Prevot of France lost 2 minutes and 14 seconds to Reusser, further complicating her bid for a second consecutive title. British rider Zoe Backstedt, 21, finished fourth in the stage, 20 seconds off the pace, in her debut Tour de France Femmes.
The Swiss rider had long targeted the stage, which coincided with Switzerland’s national day. “Of course, I’m super, super happy,” Reusser said. “This was the idea that we had since a long time—my goal of the year. We’ve been talking about it for a long time, Project Dijon, for the yellow color of the mustard! To win the time trial and maybe take yellow. It worked out.”
Temperatures exceeded 30 degrees Celsius in eastern France as riders tackled the only time trial of this year’s race. The top 10 stage finishers included Mischa Bredewold of the Netherlands in fifth, Kristen Faulkener of the United States and Cédrine Kerbaol of France tied for sixth, Lotte Claes of Belgium in eighth, Riejanne Markus of the Netherlands in ninth, and Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy in 10th. Kerbaol now holds third place in the general classification, 54 seconds behind Reusser, with Haugset fourth at 56 seconds.
The Tour de France Femmes continues with Reusser leading the general classification at 11 hours, 47 minutes, and 36 seconds. Vollering remains her closest challenger, while Ferrand-Prevot’s hopes of a repeat victory have dimmed after her time trial setback.
