Alexander Zverev reached the US Open final on Friday after defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (8-6) in a hard-fought semifinal at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York. The top-seeded German, who won the French Open in June, extended his bid for a second Grand Slam title this year and will face the winner of the all-American clash between Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe in Sunday’s final.
Zverev, playing his sixth career Grand Slam final, saved two set points in the third-set tiebreak and never dropped a set for the fourth consecutive match. He broke Khachanov once in the first set and relied on clutch play in the tiebreaks, winning 13 of 15 first-serve points in the opener. Khachanov, ranked 50th, pushed Zverev in the second and third sets but faltered in key moments, including a double fault at 7-8 in the second-set tiebreak.
The match marked Zverev’s first daytime appearance of the tournament, with the final also scheduled for an afternoon start at 2 p.m. local time. Prominent spectators, including actors Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, as well as former soccer stars Jérôme Boateng and Ronaldo, watched as Zverev secured his third straight Grand Slam final appearance after winning in Paris and finishing runner-up at Wimbledon.
“It will be incredibly special,” Zverev said of the final. “These two guys are crowd favorites, and everyone loves them. I’m looking forward to watching the semifinal tonight. Hopefully, I can make sure the American dream doesn’t come true.”
Zverev’s victory also moved him past Jannik Sinner in the year-to-date rankings, with the Italian absent due to injury. The German now holds a 24-0 record in Grand Slam matches this season, surpassing Boris Becker’s 1989 mark of 22 wins by a German player in a single year .
