The European Union is discussing new restrictions on Russian and Belarusian participation in international sports, as well as funding flows in sports, according to Latvia’s Ministry of Education and Science.
Latvia, aligning with Estonia, called in July for the European Commission to halt funding for the International Olympic Committee and sports programs linked to the easing of restrictions on Russian athletes. EU Commissioner Glenn Micallef supported the initiative in a response letter, emphasizing solidarity with Ukraine, the minister’s office told LETA. The European Council’s June conclusions stated that Russia’s participation in international sports and cultural events must not be normalized until a just and lasting peace is achieved in Ukraine.
The EU Political and Security Committee is also reviewing further restrictions, including the use of national symbols by athletes from Russia and Belarus and preventing funds from reaching the two countries. Further discussions are scheduled for the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in October .
