Dozens arrested as violent clashes disrupt Finnish football match in Lahti

Dozens of football fans were arrested in Lahti, Finland, on Saturday after violent clashes marred the build-up to a match between HJK and FC Lahti. According to police, 48 individuals were taken into custody following the disturbances, which occurred before the scheduled kick-off at 15:00 local time.
The majority of those arrested are Finnish citizens, with one individual each from Liechtenstein, Poland, Italy, and Austria. Police reported that some of the individuals were masked and that objects were thrown during the altercation. Pyrotechnic flares were also set off, adding to the chaotic scene.
The violence occurred at Paasikivenaukio square in Lahti, where fans of both teams had gathered before the match. Police had anticipated potential disturbances due to the large number of HJK fans traveling to Lahti for the match. HJK had announced that 250-300 of their supporters were expected to make the trip, with a planned march from the market square at 13:30.
HJK, one of Finland's most prominent football clubs, strongly condemned the violence. In a statement posted on the social media platform X, the club said, "HJK does not accept any form of violence. The club will provide all possible support to the authorities to ensure that those involved in the violence in Lahti are held accountable, and these individuals have no place at HJK's home matches."
The match itself proceeded without major incidents, with FC Lahti securing a 2-0 victory over HJK. This marks HJK's second consecutive loss in the Veikkausliiga, following a 4-0 defeat to KuPS in their previous fixture. After the match, HJK players went to thank their fans, but were met with boos and whistles, indicating growing dissatisfaction with the team's recent performances.
Police were quickly on the scene and had sufficient capacity to detain all those involved in the violence. Commissioner Elina Katajamäki of the Häme Police Department stated that the investigation into the incident is ongoing and that those responsible will face consequences. Police are investigating several charges, including assault, illegal masking, and possession of objects that could cause serious injury. The pyrotechnic flares have been classified as dangerous items.
The violent clashes have raised concerns about fan behavior in Finnish football. HJK has pledged full cooperation with authorities to identify and punish those responsible. The incident may lead to increased security measures at future matches and could prompt discussions about hooliganism in Finnish football.

According to reports, the player was subjected to monkey noises and verbal abuse from fans of Hallescher FC. Two fans were arrested, and both clubs condemned the incident.
These incidents highlight the ongoing issues with fan behavior in football, including violence and racism. Authorities and clubs are working to address these problems and ensure that football matches are safe and enjoyable for all fans.
