Norways King Harald hospitalised in Oslo for fluid retention after cortisone treatment

Norway’s King [Harald V](en.wikipedia.org) was admitted to Rikshospitalet in Oslo on Monday following a medical examination, the Norwegian royal house announced in a press release. The 89-year-old monarch is on sick leave for two weeks, with Crown Prince Haakon serving as regent during his absence .
The palace stated that Harald has been treated with cortisone in recent weeks for hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder characterized by the premature destruction of red blood cells. The treatment led to fluid retention in his body, necessitating hospital care .
This is the second hospital visit for Harald this month. Ten days ago, he attended a planned checkup, driving himself to the appointment. In February, he was hospitalized for two days in Tenerife while on vacation with Queen Sonja, receiving treatment for an infection and dehydration .
Harald’s health issues extend further back. In March 2024, he received a temporary pacemaker in Malaysia after his heart rate dropped to dangerously low levels, followed by a permanent pacemaker upon returning to Norway .
Other members of the Norwegian royal family have also faced health challenges. Queen Sonja was hospitalized in May with heart problems and had a pacemaker implanted in January 2025. Princess Astrid, Harald’s sister, was admitted in May with heart failure. Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant in June after being diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis in 2018 and remains in recovery .
The royal house said it would provide updates on how the king’s absence affects official engagements .
