U.S. Army Secretary Driscoll resigns after clashes with Defense Secretary Hegseth
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth faced mounting pressure to resign on Wednesday as Republican Senator Thom Tillis publicly urged President Donald Trump to fire him, citing a “leadership void” in the military amid the ongoing war with Iran.
Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who previously served on the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized Hegseth’s management in a social media post, contrasting him with former Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who resigned on Monday following reported clashes with Hegseth. “I have never witnessed more inept management of the brave men and women who serve our country. He is intimidated by competence and retreats to ginning up culture wars instead of soberly attending to the vital work of our national defense,” Tillis wrote .
Driscoll’s departure follows months of tension with Hegseth over military leadership and modernization efforts. Reports indicate Driscoll believed Hegseth’s actions would cause “damage that will affect a whole generation” in the Army, according to a source familiar with his thinking . The resignation leaves the Army without a permanent political leader at a critical time, with the U.S. engaged in a protracted conflict in the Middle East.
Hegseth, a military veteran and former TV host, has pursued controversial changes at the Pentagon, including efforts to limit journalistic access and root out what he calls “wokeness” from the military. These actions have reportedly included firing top leaders, blocking promotions, and reviewing admissions standards for military academies . Tillis, who voted to confirm Hegseth in 2025, now argues the defense secretary has prioritized culture wars over national defense.
