Former England and Liverpool star Kevin Keegan dies aged 75 after cancer battle
Kevin Keegan, the legendary English footballer and manager, has passed away at the age of 75. Keegan had been battling stage four cancer, as confirmed by his family in a statement to British media.
Keegan was a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, receiving the honor in 1978 and 1979. He had a distinguished career as a player, notably with Liverpool and Hamburg SV, and later as a manager for teams including Newcastle United and the English national team.
In a statement, Keegan's family expressed their sorrow and gratitude for the support they received. "With great sadness, we announce that Kevin Keegan has passed away at the age of 75. The former England player and manager had been battling cancer and was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments," the family said.
Keegan began his career at Liverpool, where he won three English league titles, the FA Cup, and the European Cup. He later moved to Hamburg SV, where he continued to excel, winning the Ballon d'Or twice. He played 63 matches for the English national team, scoring 21 goals, and participated in the 1982 World Cup. Over his career, he played nearly 750 club matches.
After his playing career, Keegan turned to management, leading teams like Newcastle United, Fulham, and the English national team. He was particularly noted for his time at Newcastle, where he led the team to the brink of the Premier League title in the 1995-96 season.
