Russia freed former U.S. Marine Robert Gilman on Tuesday after President Vladimir Putin approved a humanitarian pardon for the ailing 32-year-old American, U.S. officials said.
Gilman, who had been jailed in Voronezh since January 2022, was placed on a State Department plane bound for Washington Dulles Airport, accompanied by his mother, Nina, and a medical team of four doctors, according to U.S. officials speaking on condition of anonymity. A U.S. official who spoke with Gilman said he was walking and talking. “All things considered, he seems to be in good shape,” the official said .
The White House and the State Department had repeatedly urged Moscow to release Gilman so he could receive medical treatment in the United States. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had raised Gilman’s case with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in the Philippines last month, according to Reuters .
Gilman was arrested in Voronezh, about 550 kilometers south of Moscow, after Russian state media reported he had allegedly kicked a police officer while intoxicated. His father, Vladimir Gilman, who emigrated from Russia to Massachusetts, denied the charges in a 2024 Boston Globe op-ed, stating his son had fallen ill and accidentally kicked the officer, who was uninjured and dropped the charges. Gilman was initially sentenced to 4½ years in prison, but his term was later extended to 10 years following additional convictions for alleged attacks on prison staff .
In late June, Gilman was transferred from a prison hospital to the psychiatric ward of a civilian emergency hospital in Voronezh in a catatonic-like state described as a “dissociative stupor,” according to Eric Lebson, chief strategy officer of Global Reach, an advocacy group representing Gilman’s family. Lebson said Gilman had been subjected to harsh treatment in prison and was fed through a tube while restrained to a bed .
U.S. officials said no Russian prisoners were released in exchange for Gilman’s freedom. Upon arrival at Dulles, Gilman was expected to be greeted by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and deputy national security adviser Sebastian Gorka, who had worked for his release alongside Rubio, Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner, and U.S. special envoy for hostage response Adam Boehler. Gilman was then to be flown to a rehabilitation center in San Antonio, Texas, for medical treatment .
The Kremlin did not immediately comment on the pardon, and no official document confirming it was published on the Kremlin’s website as of Tuesday afternoon .
