NEC Nijmegen face near-impossible task after 3-1 home defeat to BodøGlimt in Champions League play-off

NEC Nijmegen’s Champions League play-off hopes suffered a severe setback on Wednesday after a 3-1 home defeat to FK Bodø/Glimt, leaving the Dutch side with a daunting task in next week’s second leg in Norway.
The Norwegian visitors dominated for long spells at a sold-out Goffert Stadium, taking the lead in the 25th minute through Sondre Brunstad Fet. Bodø/Glimt doubled their advantage just before halftime when referee François Letexier awarded a penalty after Ole Blomberg was fouled by Tobias Storm. Andreas Helmersen converted from the spot. Alhaji Gero added a third in the 50th minute with a header, before NEC’s Clément Bischoff pulled one back in the 85th minute to offer a glimmer of hope.
NEC manager Dick Schreuder admitted his side had underestimed Bodø/Glimt’s quality. “When you see them live, they are even better,” Schreuder said. “They defend well, they counter well, they dare to play football. It’s a shame we gave away the goals so easily” .
Bodø/Glimt, who reached the Champions League quarter-finals last season under manager Kjetil Knutsen, have been impressive in European competition, including a notable victory over Inter Milan in the previous campaign. Their performance in Nijmegen reinforced that pedigree, with Jens Petter Hauge and Nikita Haikin among the standout performers. Haikin made a crucial save in the 30th minute to deny Tjarron Chery, while Hauge was involved in the build-up to Fet’s opener.
The return leg will take place in Norway next Tuesday, with NEC requiring a significant turnaround to progress. Dutch media described the task as near-impossible, with one outlet stating, “It will take a miracle for NEC to qualify” .
Elsewhere in Champions League play-offs, Celtic secured a commanding 3-0 first-leg win over Austria’s LASK, with Camilo Duran scoring twice and Benjamin Nygren adding a spectacular long-range strike. Celtic’s efficiency in front of goal contrasted with LASK’s struggles, despite the Austrian side creating dangerous counterattacking opportunities .
