New York City bans AI for 2-K to eighth-grade public school students for one year
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced a one-year ban on artificial intelligence for students from 2-K through eighth grade in public schools, affecting around 600,000 children. The moratorium removes student-facing AI software and companion chatbots from classrooms, with high school students permitted limited use in special cases .
The policy, unveiled Wednesday by Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels, also prohibits emotional support chatbots across all grades and restricts screen time to 30 minutes daily for third to fifth graders and 45 minutes for sixth to eighth graders. Personal devices with screens are banned for students up to third grade, and teachers are barred from using AI to grade assignments .
Mamdani framed the decision as a rejection of industry pressure, stating, “The tech industry wants to convince us that early education with AI is not only inevitable but necessary. We don’t see it that way.” Some parent groups, which had pushed for a two-year moratorium, criticized the measures as insufficient . The ban takes effect as students return to classrooms this month .
