Police fatally shoot armed man in Beauvais after he wounds officer outside home
Police in Beauvais fatally shot an armed man on Saturday after he opened fire on officers outside his home, wounding one in the arm, according to the local prosecutor’s office.
Prosecutor Nicolas Septe said in a statement that officers were attempting to enter the man’s residence when he fired at them, striking a policeman in the arm. After efforts to neutralize the man—described as “passably excited and threatening”—officers returned fire, hitting him. He was later pronounced dead after emergency services arrived, Septe said .
The man, in his 30s, had recently been discharged from a psychiatric hospital and was seen earlier firing a weapon from his motorcycle in the street, according to the prosecutor’s account .
An investigation into the incident has been referred to France’s police oversight body, the IGPN .
