Student kills classmate, self in Philippines high school shooting: officials confirm two dead
A high school student armed with a pistol and a rifle opened fire in a classroom at Ateneo de Zamboanga University’s high school in the southern Philippine city of Zamboanga on Tuesday, killing a fellow student before turning the weapon on himself, officials said.
Zamboanga Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso told DZMM radio the suspect, a ninth-grade student, shot a male student in a higher grade, who died at the scene, before killing himself. The university’s president, Ernald Andal, confirmed two fatalities and said there were no additional deaths or reported injuries. “As of now, we confirm that there are two fatalities,” Andal said. “There are no more active shooters.”
Regional police spokeswoman Shella Chang said the suspect brought the firearms onto the campus and opened fire in a classroom. “The investigation is ongoing … We are still trying to identify the motive,” Chang told AFP . A video circulated by local media, apparently livestreamed on Facebook, showed the barrel of a gun moving down a hallway before being pointed into a classroom and fired, with students in uniforms screaming and fleeing. The alleged attacker’s Facebook account was later disabled.
Olaso told DZBB radio the suspect wore a body camera to livestream the attack and initially fired at a teacher, though it was unclear if the teacher was hit. Two other people were injured, he said. Hundreds of students were evacuated after the gunshots, and the school coordinated with parents to pick up their children, ensuring the safety of those remaining on campus.
National police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said authorities were establishing the circumstances and urged the public to refrain from sharing unconfirmed reports. “The safety and well-being of the school community remain a priority,” Nartatez said.
The shooting follows a June incident at a public high school in Tacloban City, where three students were killed and about 20 others injured after two schoolmates opened fire on campus. Police arrested two students, ages 14 and 15, in connection with that attack. While school shootings are rare in the Philippines, crimes involving firearms remain prevalent due to the circulation of unlicensed weapons, despite strict gun ownership regulations.
