Two beluga whales and four dolphins rescued from the closed Marineland park in Canada arrived at the Oceanogràfic de València early Thursday after a seven-hour direct flight from Toronto. The transfer was part of a coordinated rescue operation by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and a consortium of accredited aquariums, with support from authorities in Canada, the United States, Spain, and the Generalitat Valenciana.
The six female animals—belugas Cleopatra and Jelly Bean, and dolphins Tsunami, Lida, Echo, and Marina—were transported in specialized modules designed for their safety. Veterinary teams and animal care specialists from Oceanogràfic and other institutions accompanied them throughout the journey, which began with a road transfer from Marineland to a Canadian airport before the flight to Valencia. Upon landing, the animals were moved by road to the aquarium, where they began adapting to their new environment.
The operation is the fifth in a series to relocate 30 belugas and four dolphins from Marineland, which closed over a year ago. The animals are being distributed to five AZA-accredited facilities: Shedd Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, and Oceanogràfic de València, the only European institution involved in the rescue.
In a separate wildlife development, a nearly 14-foot king cobra was discovered in a family’s courtyard in Vithura, India, on Thursday. The snake was found among plants in the Orupara settlement of Pattankulichapara, Thiruvananthapuram, prompting the family to call the Forest Department for assistance. A team led by Roshni, a member of the Paruthippally Rapid Response Team, safely removed the cobra, which is set to be returned to the forest. Roshni’s unit has handled other high-profile rescues, including a 14-foot king cobra recovered from a well in the Kottur-Aamala-Aayiramkaal Unnathiyil area and a 15-foot, 44-pound cobra near Peppara Dam in July 2025, which she secured in a sack within six minutes, according to Asianet News .
