Former NOS correspondent defends neutral journalism on Dutch TV after Israel-Palestine role
Nasrah Habiballah, a former NOS correspondent in Israel and the Palestinian territories, appeared as a guest on the Dutch television program *Zomergasten* on Sunday, where she emphasized her commitment to neutral journalism and avoided discussing personal experiences related to her departure from the role.
Habiballah, who returned to the Netherlands two months ago, described her time as a correspondent as her "dream job," but noted that the outbreak of war after 1.5 months shifted her responsibilities toward delivering live, hard news rather than the in-depth reporting she preferred. She told presenter Janine Abbring that her approach as a journalist was to highlight "shades of gray" rather than personal opinions, stating, "What I think about things doesn’t matter. Even now as a *Zomergast*, I am not an activist."
The interview’s early minutes resembled a job interview, with Abbring asking Habiballah about her methods for engaging with people, such as her work in community centers in disadvantaged neighborhoods during her time as a regional reporter in Rotterdam and The Hague. Habiballah resisted sharing personal anecdotes, including the story of her Palestinian grandfather, who lost an eye when the Israeli army seized his land, or her father’s silence about the burdens of his birthplace.
In promotional material for the show, Habiballah answered social media questions from the VPRO’s editorial team, such as whether she was nervous and what she hoped to achieve with her appearance. She responded with broad statements, saying, "I hope people will look at the world with a slightly different perspective," and reiterated that the overarching theme of her evening would be "humanity."
Dutch media coverage of her *Zomergasten* appearance noted her deliberate avoidance of discussing the specific wartime hardships that led to her resignation. One review described her as "the calm war correspondent without bold stories," while another highlighted her "extremely thoughtful" advocacy for impartial journalism.
