Alcaraz withdraws from Cincinnati Open with wrist injury, misses U.S. Open warm-up
World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the Cincinnati Open on Tuesday due to a lingering right wrist injury, tournament officials confirmed. The 23-year-old Spaniard, the defending champion in Cincinnati, has not competed since retiring from the Barcelona Open in April, missing the French Open and Wimbledon as a result.
“We know Carlos is doing everything he can to get back to playing tournaments as soon as possible,” Cincinnati tournament director Bob Moran said in a statement. “We wish him the best with his recovery and look forward to welcoming him back to Cincinnati in the future.”
Alcaraz had been expected to use the ATP Masters 1000 event, which begins Aug. 11, as preparation for his U.S. Open title defense later this month. His absence follows earlier withdrawals from the Montreal Masters, where play is underway this week. The seven-time Grand Slam winner remains entered in the U.S. Open, which starts Aug. 30.
In Montreal, Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann advanced to the third round with a 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-2) victory over Italian Flavio Cobolli. The 34-year-old Hanfmann, ranked 57th, called the second-set tiebreak “a bit dicey” but expressed pride in securing the win. Meanwhile, Daniel Altmaier fell 6-2, 6-1 to American Brandon Nakashima. Top seed Alexander Zverev, the French Open champion, received a bye and will face Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands in his opening match.
On the WTA side in Toronto, former world No. 1 Iga Swiatek opened her U.S. Open preparations with a 6-0, 6-3 second-round win over Czech player Sara Bejlek. Stefanos Tsitsipas, a former world No. 3, also progressed in Montreal, defeating Martin Damm 6-4, 6-4 in the first round. Dutch player Botic van de Zandschulp reached the second round in Montreal after a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, setting up a match against fourth-seeded Daniil Medvedev.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is scheduled to undergo a knee check-up in Milan before traveling to the U.S. but remains on the entry list for both Cincinnati and the U.S. Open, according to Italian reports.
